About KUAI

The instrumental post-rock band KUAI was formed in Reykjavik, Iceland, in the summer of 1998. The band consisted of Baldur Ingvar Sigurðsson on drums, Egill Antonsson on bass, and Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson (called Steini) and Sigurður Þór Rögnvaldsson (called Siggi) on guitars. When asked to describe their music, the band explained that it is difficult to put into words, but it can be categorized as instrumental rock with experimental elements. They draw inspiration from their roots in rock and heavy metal, and the guitars often improvise lines influenced by jazz improvisation, while the bass and drums provide powerful patterns as the foundation.

The album "kuai" was recorded between September 2000 and June 2001 by Elmar Þór Gilbertsson, then the band mixed the album themselves. One track, "Rover," was recorded and mixed by Jón Elvar Hafsteinsson in 1999. The album cover was designed by Dóri. From October 2001, the band assembled the CDs and sent to Hljómalind music store and sold at concerts.
To capture the raw energy and spontaneity of their performances, the band opted for a "live" studio recording (without an audience). However, some parts were recorded separately afterwards, including some guitar parts, organ and piano played by Egill, saxophone in "Andefni" played by Steinar Sigurðsson, and cellos in "Lesblinda I" and "Lesblinda II" played by Hallgrímur Jónas Jensson and Rannveig Bjarnadóttir ( Steini arranged the cello parts).
Due to an accidental finger cut on his "fretting" hand at the beginning of the recording period, Steini re-tuned his guitar, and the band transposed many tracks to D in order to minimize strain on his injured hand while playing. Egill also re-tuned his deepest string to D on his 4 string bass in many of the tracks.
